NACRA INFUSION WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - GOLD COAST
10-02-2013

Narrowest of Margins Separate Nacra Infusions

After a mixed bag of conditions, the Fastaway Couriers 2013 Nacra Infusion World Championships were decided by just 0.2 points.
Adam Beattie and Jamie Leitner had to beat Mick Guinea and Viv Haydon in the final race and finish better than fifth because of the average points awarded to them for races 1 and 2 of the titles. In the end, a clean start meant Beattie and Leitner were first to the top mark and they didn't look back from there. Guinea and Haydon were buried at the start and had to fight back. They managed to get all the way back to second, but there was no way Beattie and Leitner were going to let them pass.

"In the second race of the day both Adam and us had shockers," said Mick Guinea back on the shore. "We could drop our result but Adam had his result count towards his average. Then we won the third race and were leading, and would have been happy for the PRO to call that the regatta. However another race was run and Adam won that one and the regatta."

"It was a tough start to the regatta with the bingle before the first race," Beattie commented about the opening day. "We had a frantic effort to replace the hull to get back on the water. We did get back on the water for the last race that day and the jury were good enough to reward us average points. It was good to be back sailing with Jamie and we sailed pretty consistent in the heavy airs. In the second race today, I followed Mick to the wrong side of the course and we both got drops. Then he won the third and got in front overall but we won the last race, and that was enough to get him."

Warren Guinea and Aaron Linton were third behind Beattie and Leitner and Guinea and Haydon. "We didn't sail as consistent as we would have liked but did enough to be the best of the rest behind Mick and Adam. Both of them sailed really well and deserved the results," Said Warren

Principal Race Officer Ross Wilson was enthusiastic about the regatta outcomes. "We had some mixed conditions with the lighter winds this morning and heavier airs throughout the week. It was great sailing and great camaraderie with the Nacra guys."   Source
